May 15 – Trevor Thompson
This week I thought I would share with you an article in last Thursday’s Herald Sun titled “Cancer Patients Surviving Longer”
It’s a great snapshot on the trends of Cancer over last 20 years.
A summary of key points as follows:
* More than 60,000 lives have been saved over last 20 years
* The biggest reductions in deaths are for Lung, bowel and breast cancer.
* Lung cancer is still the biggest killer.
* There has been little improvement in brain and pancreatic cancer, and cancer of the oesophagus.
* 30 years ago an Australian diagnosed with cancer had a one in two chance of surviving for five years. Today a person has two out of three chance of surviving.

Interestingly, CommInsure’s Cancer Trauma claims for males and females varies significantly.
In 2009, 48% of all Male Trauma claims were due to Cancer compared to 81% for all Females. This is a huge difference highlighting the need for Trauma cover.
Cancer is by far the biggest condition that is claimed for.
