February 22 – Trevor Thompson

As a result of the 2009 bushfires, 2,030 homes and 173 lives were lost. While the general insurance industry paid out in excess of $1.2 billion (84 per cent for property or contents, 16 per cent for vehicles), the life insurance industry processed only just over $10 million in life insurance claims. What these figures suggest is that while people are very likely to insure their homes and contents, many tend to forget to insure the very thing that funds these possessions – themselves.
